The Mecca – Hossegor, France

‘The mecca’ is the name we have given to Hossegor, France. Hossegor and the surrounding Landes area is known as the surf capital of Europe so it has become our Mecca.
Although the surf is great (so my boyfriend tells me), the area offers a relaxed sense of comfort surrounded by unspoiled nature and every time we visit, it is the closest feeling to going home. A lot of places we visit once and that will be enough but the Mecca we can return to again and again.

On our first visit, we managed to find the perfect accommodation, Board and Breakfast. Run by a couple originally from Belgium, Ine and Anton are wonderful hosts and really make all of their guests feel at home. Anton is very knowledgeable about the surf and area and is always willing to give guests a daily surf report or advice on local conditions.

The breakfasts are always healthy and wholesome from fresh smoothies, croissants or crepe’s with their home-made chocolate sauce. The house is modern and clean with spacious rooms, a great ambience and areas that lend themselves to sharing space with like-minded travellers from around the world and now that we’ve been, we couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else. If you’re a couple, I’d recommend the beach house which is a private garden bungalow but they cater for solo/groups/couples alike. They also offer surf & yoga weeks which we are eager to try.

Our first meal out is usually always at Sushi Stop for fresh, delicious sushi. Another favourite is Le Surfing for a relaxed atmosphere and delicious food to boot. For your sweet-tooth head to one of the many boulangeries or to grab a fresh baguette for a day’s picnic.

The Mecca - Hossegor, France
The best thing about Hossegor (besides the surf for surfers) is the close proximity to Spain. When the surf isn’t great, you can be in Spain in an hour. San Sebastian is a wonderful day trip for a bit of Spanish culture. More about this in another post.
Biarritz is another easy to reach destination and is known as the ‘Cannes’ of the west coast of France. For old world charm and beautiful scenic walks and beaches, Biarritz is only a 30 minute drive from Hossegor. Hossegor is easily reached from Bordeaux airport (2 hours way) or Biarritz airport (30 mins away) with direct flights on Easyjet and British Airways from London Gatwick airport.
From a surfer’s point of view the surf spots are;
Labenne – Labenne
Le Piste – Capbreton
Le Sud – Hossegor
Grande Plage – Biarritz
Hendaye – between Biarritz and San Sebastian (good for beginners)
Zurriola – San Sebastian

Just adding some of the lyrics from “Surfin' Safari” by the Beach Boys to keep you inspired 🙂

Come on (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me
Come along (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me

    Let's go surfin' now
    Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
